See You Shortly, Spain

The least recent of my trips but one of the fondest, the country of Spain holds a special place in my heart because of its culture, language, and people that have impacted my life years beyond being immersed in its beauty. From the streets of Segovia to the tastes of Tejares, the two weeks I spent in Spain are some of the best life lessons and world experiences to gain as a traveler.

Traveling to Spain was my first time in Europe, and I can't think of a better place to start and experience the culture-filled and history-rich streets, cathedrals, and restaurants than Spain. While in Spain, I had the opportunity to explore the castles Ávila‎, the Aqueduct of Segovia, the Plaza Mayor in Madrid, and take in the most breathtaking views in Toledo.

Ávila, also known as the "walled world," is a city in the rolling hill country northwest of Madrid. It’s best known for its intact medieval city walls, with 80-plus crenelated, semicircular towers and 9 gates, including the arched El Alcázar, on the eastern side. Long sections atop the walls are walkable. At night, the lighted walls are a distinctive sight.

The Aqueduct of Segovia was built during the second half of the 1st century A.D. under the rule of the Roman Empire and supplied water from the Frío River to the city into the 20th century. The remaining portion of the structure stands 28.5 meters tall at its maximum height and nearly 6 additional meters deep in the main section.

The Plaza Mayor, also known as "the heart of Madrid," is a sight for sore eyes. Rich in history, the bustling plaza is the ideal destination to begin your stroll through one of Madrid’s most charming districts. One of the most magical moments is being in the plaza at night when the lights turn on; seeing thousands of warm lights twinkle around the sky is an intangible feeling of happiness and awe.

As a whole, Spain is a diversified country with a mix of Roman classical inspiration and intricate Moorish medieval designs. From the cobblestone streets to archaic cathedrals, Spain is a glorious city for any traveler to experience. The infinity of food, wine, landscapes, towns, and people create for a wonderful traveling experience.
